What does barber & hairdresser insurance include?
Our experienced insurance advisors will take the time to understand how your business operates before recommending a tailored insurance package. Every barber and hairdresser faces slightly different risks, depending on where and how they work. That’s why we build flexible policies around your specific needs. Unsure which cover you need? Speak to an advisor for a personalised recommendation.
While the exact cover will vary, a comprehensive hairdressing or barbering insurance policy typically includes:
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is essential for anyone working directly with the public, including both barbers and hairdressers. It provides cover if a client is injured or their property is damaged during an appointment – protecting your business if a claim is made against you. In fast-paced salon and barbershop environments, accidents can happen even with the best precautions.
Public liability insurance:
- Covers legal costs and compensation if a client is injured on your premises
- Helps protect your professional reputation in the event of a claim
- Is often required by landlords, salons, or commercial premises, before you can operate
Employers' liability insurance
Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ staff, whether you run a busy barbershop, a high-street salon, or rent out chairs to others. This cover protects you if an employee becomes ill or is injured as a result of their work. It also applies to apprentices and part-time team members.
Employers’ liability insurance:
- Provides legal and financial protection if a stylist or apprentice is injured using tools or handling products
- Helps you meet legal obligations and avoid penalties for non-compliance
- Covers the cost of employee compensation, medical treatment and legal defence if a claim arises
Treatment liability insurance
Treatment liability cover is particularly important for hairdressers and barbers who offer services that involve direct contact with clients’ skin, hair or scalp. It protects you if a treatment causes injury, illness or an allergic reaction. You’ll need to outline all the treatments you offer to us so we can ensure you’re comprehensively covered.
Treatment liability insurance:
- Covers services like colouring, perming, shaving, beard trimming and hair extensions
- Protects against claims resulting from burns, rashes, infections or skin irritation
- Reassures clients that your treatments are professionally covered in case anything goes wrong
- Non-invasive treatments that could be covered: manicures, pedicures, eyelash tinting, threading, waxing, facials (non-chemical), massages, and more
- Invasive treatments that could be covered: semi-permanent makeup, microblading, laser/IPL, micro-needling, tattoo removal, dermal fillers, Botox, and more.
Whatever treatments you offer, this cover is a must-have for reassuring clients that your work is professionally covered and protecting yourself in the event that anything ever goes wrong.
Contents & stock insurance
Contents insurance covers the essential equipment and products you use as part of your barbering and hairdressing services – from scissors and clippers to chairs, mirrors, and straighteners. This protection helps keep your business running if tools are stolen, damaged or destroyed.
Contents insurance:
- Ensures you can quickly replace stolen or damaged tools without financial disruption
- Covers specialist equipment such as barber chairs or colour mixing stations
- Protects expensive stock like hair dye, shampoos and styling products stored onsite
Personal accident insurance
Barbering and hairdressing are physically demanding jobs. If you’re self-employed or run a small team, an accident that prevents you from working could significantly impact your income. Personal accident insurance helps provide financial support while you recover.
Personal accident insurance:
- Offers a payout if you’re unable to work due to injury from an accident at work or elsewhere
- Helps cover lost income and essential bills while you recover, helping to protect your livelihood
- Provides peace of mind for sole traders and freelance barbers or hairdressers who rely on their physical ability to earn
Business Interruption Insurance
If your salon or barbershop is forced to close due to an insured event like fire or flood, business interruption insurance will help protect your income and ongoing expenses. It’s particularly useful if you rely on regular, in-person appointments at a specific location.
Business interruption insurance:
- Helps maintain cash flow if you’re unable to open your premises
- Covers loss of profit and fixed expenses like staff and suppliers during closures
- Supports temporary relocation or adjustments needed to resume trading
Buildings insurance
If you own the premises where your salon or barbershop operates, buildings insurance protects the physical structure against damage caused by fire, flood, storms or vandalism.
Buildings insurance:
- Covers the cost of repairing structural damage to your property, minimising downtime
- Essential for barbers or hairdressers who own their building rather than lease
- Includes permanent fixtures like signage, shopfronts and built-in furniture
Cyber & data insurance
Barbers and hairdressers increasingly rely on digital tools – from online booking systems and card machines to storing client preferences – meaning cyber insurance is now a must. It protects your business if your systems are hacked or client data is exposed.
Cyber insurance:
- Provides expert support and cover following a data breach or hack
- Helps cover recovery costs, client notifications and potential compensation
- Reassures clients that their personal data is protected, boosting your credibility
Commercial legal insurance
Legal insurance covers the cost of professional legal advice or representation if you face disputes related to your business – such as staff issues, contract disagreements or tax investigations. This cover is especially useful for salon and barbershop owners.
Commercial legal insurance:
- Supports you through employment disputes, protecting your reputation and finances
- Helps with recovering unpaid invoices or handling lease disagreements
- Provides access to legal expertise when dealing with HMRC investigations or reputational issues
- Some policies could also include cover for financial loss due to jury duty summonings for you or your staff.

Barber & hairdresser insurance FAQs
Do I need insurance if I rent a chair?
Yes, even if you’re renting a chair or working freelance in a hairdresser’s or barbershop, you should at least have your own public liability and tools cover, as you’ll be responsible for your own clients, tools, and treatments.
Is barber’s or hairdresser’s public liability insurance compulsory?
Not legally, but it’s highly recommended. It protects you from costly claims if a client is injured or their property is damaged – which could easily happen in your industry.
What’s the best insurance for a self-employed hairdresser?
At a minimum: public liability, contents, and potentially treatment liability. Speak to our advisors for a tailored quote that won’t leave your livelihood vulnerable.
What insurance do I need for a salon with staff?
At a minimum, you’ll need public liability, employers’ liability and contents cover. You may also need buildings, treatment, or business interruption insurance, depending on your setup.
Is treatment liability included in hairdresser insurance?
It can be. Treatment liability protects you if a colouring, perming, or styling service goes wrong and causes harm or damage. This is especially important for salons offering chemical treatments.
Does salon insurance cover my freelance staff?
Freelancers may not be covered under your main policy. If they rent chairs or work independently, they’ll need their own public liability and tools cover. You’ll still need employers’ liability if they’re classed as employees.
Can I get insurance for a home salon?
Yes. If you run a salon from home, you may need specialist business insurance as standard home cover won’t usually apply. This can include liability, equipment, and contents cover tailored to your setup.
How do I prove I have the right insurance for my salon or barbershop?
Once your policy is arranged, your insurer or broker can provide a certificate of insurance, which you can display in your premises or provide to landlords, suppliers, or regulatory bodies if required.
What happens if a client claims I damaged their hair?
If you have treatment liability cover, your policy could cover the cost of compensation and legal defence. This includes cases involving burns, allergic reactions, or poor results from treatments.
