Insurance covers to consider
When deciding what insurance and covers you need to protect your business, you should consider the following:
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance should be a fundamental part of your bakery insurance, to protect you should anything happen to your customers and suppliers such as accidental injuries that may occur at your premises. As careful as you may be, accidents do happen, so having the right baker insurance covers in place to protect your livelihood is essential.

Employers' liability for bakers
Employers’ liability insurance will typically safeguard your finances should the worst happen to your employees, so for example, if they accidentally burn themselves in the bakery any awards for damages and legal costs should be taken care of by your insurance.
If you do employ a team, then you will need to take out employers’ liability cover to safeguard your employees against accidents at work.

Property covers
Your premises and equipment are pivotal to the running of your bakery. If you own the building you work from, business buildings cover can be included within your insurance policy, as well as all your specialist equipment, contents and stock. Typically, they can be protected against a number of perils, from weather events, to impact damage, to fire and theft and much more.

Business interruption
Business Interruption can cover your gross profit and fixed expenses if you suffer damage at your premises meaning you are unable to trade. This can help to tide you over until you are back up and running, and may help you trade temporarily from another location while you get back on your feet. This means if you have a fire at the building and this stops you from trading temporarily, you shouldn’t be out of pocket, and your gross income and fixed expenses would typically be covered.

Commercial legal protection
Commercial legal protection will typically cover a number of defined events, from tax and VAT disputes to contract and employment disputes. It can also offer financial protection if someone takes you to court.

Bakery insurance FAQs
Do I need bakery insurance?
Bakeries can present a high-risk working environment for all those involved from staff to clients to suppliers, meaning bakery insurance is essential. Without the correct cover in place, your livelihood may be open to claims that could jeopardise your future ability to trade. Having the right insurance can let you focus on the job at hand and work without worry.
Retail bakeries and bakery shops can be exposed to a variety of hazards, from fires and floods to slips, trips and falls, meaning there are a number of considerations to take into account when arranging your bakery insurance.
What covers do bakeries need?
At Premierline, we offer flexible bakery insurance policies that can be as simple or comprehensive as you need depending on your business requirements. When deciding what insurance and covers you need to protect your bakery shop, you should consider the following:
- Public liability – for injured shop visitors or damage to their property.
- Employers’ liability – to protect your shop employees.
- Buildings cover – to cover for loss or damage to your shop premises.
- Equipment, contents and stock – to reinstate your items and belongings.
- Business interruption – to keep finances running when disaster strikes.
- Money cover – for theft or attempted theft.
- Goods in transit – to cover for loss or damage to stock when in transit, loading or unloading.
- Business legal expenses – to cover the cost of legal expenses or defending your shop against legal action.
Depending on your type of bakery business, you may need to consider other covers for food manufacturing, cafés or home businesses.
How much does bakery insurance cost?
The cost of your bakery shop insurance will depend on your baking and shop activities, the location of your bakery and the amount and type of covers you require to protect your shop. Like any other insurance, generally the more cover you require the higher the cost could be.
The value you gain from having the right cover in place is a huge benefit to your business. A shop insurance policy is a product that you have paid for that you may never get to use, but also a product that you hope you will never need to call on.

Depending on your type of business, you may be interested in food manufacturing insurance, café insurance or home business insurance.
Do I need insurance to bake and sell cakes at home?

However, if you are a new business, don’t worry – our business insurance advisors will be able to guide you through the process of understanding and identifying your insurance needs.
How soon will I get my policy documents?
We will email your policy documentation to you which means you will receive these straight away. Alternatively, if you would prefer your documents to be posted, you will normally receive them within 5 working days.
